Former New York Giants defensive coordinator and head coach Steve Spagnuolo has emerged as the favorite to become the Kansas City Chiefs’ next defensive coordinator, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

As per Schefter, Spagnuolo worked with Chiefs head coach Andy Reid with the Philadelphia Eagles and also share the same agent.

The Chiefs are looking for a new defensive coordinator as they fired Bob Sutton after their AFC Championship Game defeat to the New England Patriots. Rex Ryan was a name that had recently been linked to that post.

Spagnuolo has decent experience as a defensive coordinator. He had two stints as DC of the Giants and also spent one season on the job with the New Orleans Saints. He famously helped the New York Giants beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl back in 2008.

Spagnuolo did not coach in the 2018 season. He previously spent the past three seasons as Giants DC and took over as interim head coach in 2017 after Ben McAdoo’s firing.

If he gets the job, Spagnuolo will need to fix a Chiefs defense which was the team’s biggest weakness this season. Their run defense was particularly porous. That weakness showed itself once again in the AFC Championship Game against the Patriots, as they coughed up 176 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

The Chiefs’ offense should be set for a long time as long as Patrick Mahomes is around. But if they can show improvements defensively, they can become big-time Super Bowl contenders moving forward.
