The Kansas City Chiefs were dealt a blow when free agent safety Tyrann Mathieu opted not to return, instead signing with the New Orleans Saints. While losing an All-Pro safety is enough of a blow as it is, it's even worse when Mathieu himself played a role in sticking it to his former team. Here's how, as reported by Raiders Wire of USA Today.

Had Mathieu been signed at any point between the start of free agency on March 16 and the deadline on Monday, May 2, he would have garnered the Chiefs a 4th round compensatory pick in the 2023 draft according to Over the Cap figures, while counting against the total for the team that signed him.

Per Raiders Wire, the Chiefs would have received a 4th round compensatory pick in the 2023 draft if he was signed between March 16 and May 2.

Made official on May 3, Mathieu, who was courted by the Saints and was rumored to be headed there, seemingly waited to sign the dotted line so that the Chiefs would be unable to receive draft compensation.

The star safety couldn't have been happy with how his time ended in Kansas City, as the team reportedly never offered him a new contract while signing Justin Reid to effectively fill his role on defense.

While there are several factors that could have caused Mathieu to sign later with the Chiefs, it's far more likely that the Pro Bowler wanted to stick it to his former team.
