Kansas City Chiefs legend Tony Gonzalez set just about all major franchise receiving records at the tight end position during his 12 years with the team. However, Travis Kelce is aiming to take those records for his own.

Gonzalez is completely fine with Kelce breaking his previous marks, though. He’s a big fan of Kelce’s and believes that with the way the game’s being played today, it’s just a matter of time for more of those records fall.

“A guy like Travis Kelce, a phenomenal athlete, an unbelievable talent and he’s doing what he’s supposed to be doing in this offense,” Gonzalez said per Blair Kerkhoff of the Kansas City Star. “He’s setting records.”

“He should get the records. Records are made to be broken. I got to break them; now it’s up to somebody else. With all these great quarterbacks, I think you’re going to see the (big) numbers because that’s the day and age of the NFL.”

Kelce has already claimed one of Gonzalez’s franchise tight end records — the most receiving yards in a single season — in their Week 16 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. He’s now within striking distance of the NFL record for single-season receiving yards for a tight end, which is the 1,327 Rob Gronkowski had in 2011.

Kelce is also closing in on Gonzalez’s record for most catches in a single season. He needs just five more to top Gonzalez’s mark of 102 in 2004.

The Chiefs play host to the Oakland Raiders on Sunday in their regular-season finale. Kelce burned the Raiders for 168 yards on 12 catches — both season-bests — and two touchdowns earlier this month, so he should fancy his chances of keeping that Gonzalez record for himself.
