Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Willie Gay was arrested Wednesday night in the Kansas City area “in a misdemeanor criminal damage case,” per KCTV5.

The 23-year-old Gay was reportedly booked around 10:30 p.m. and held overnight awaiting bond. The Johnson County Sheriff's Office hasn't provided any other details on the matter, but those should come on Thursday once Gay is out of jail.

This news comes just days before the Chiefs are set to take on the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional Round of the 2022 NFL Playoffs. While Gay isn't one of the best players on Kansas City's defense, he has been a consistent starter. Gay started against the Pittsburgh Steelers this past week and started 11 of the 12 regular-season games he played in this season.

The Chiefs drafted Gay in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The linebacker played in all 16 games as a rookie and started eight of those games, but he didn't play in the Super Bowl run because of the injury.

This arrest will be a small distraction for Kansas City as the team prepares for the playoff rematch against Buffalo. It remains to be seen if Gay is punished for his actions and if he'll play against a powerful Bills squad. Stay tuned for more details.
