Earl Thomas went down with a season-ending broken leg yesterday in the Seattle Seahawks' Week 4 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals. It was a disappointing end to his season, especially because he was playing through a disagreement with the Seahawks.

All offseason long, Thomas tried to get a new contract done with the Seahawks or a trade out of town. Neither of those things ended up happening. News has come out that the Seahawks were inching towards a trade that would have given Thomas exactly what he wanted.

According to a report from Terez Paylor of Yahoo! Sports, the Kansas City Chiefs were getting close to acquiring Thomas from the Seahawks.

“The Chiefs, in particular, were particularly annoyed with the development, as sources tell Yahoo Sports that although the two teams couldn’t agree on a trade this past week, the two sides were inching closer toward a deal and there was internal optimism something would be struck before the deadline.”

Kansas City would have been an ideal landing spot for Thomas. Not only would he have been able to move on from the Seahawks, he likely would have received a lucrative long-term deal.

Thomas flipped off his own sideline while he was being carted off the field. That shows exactly what the star defensive back thought about the way he was treated by Seattle.

Thomas was having a massive season for the Seahawks before the injury. He had racked up 22 tackles to go along with three interceptions and five defended passes.

Hopefully, Thomas will be able to bounce back strong from this injury and get back to full strength for next season. His contract situation will be much more difficult coming off of a broken leg.

Expect this situation to impact how players hold out of their contract disputes moving forward. This is exactly the reason that Pittsburgh Steelers' running back Le'Veon Bell is still holding out of his situation.
