Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has come a long way since officially becoming the starter in the 2018 NFL season. Whether or not they win Super Bowl LIV, he appears to be in line for a massive payday in the near future.

The fifth-year option on Mahomes rookie contract will expire after the 2021 NFL season. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, he could very well sign a $200 million deal that pays him up to $40 million per year:

“My understanding is that he is not only going to beat Russell Wilson as the highest-paid quarterback at $35 million a year, he is going to shatter it,” Rapoport said. “The number that has been referenced to me is potentially $40 million a year.”

Although Mahomes could be eligible for a new contract this offseason, he may have to take a patient approach with the NFL's current collective-bargaining agreement set to end after the 2021 season.

The bar has already been set with the recent slew of quarterback deals, and it is only going to grow with the salary cap increase in the 2020 NFL season while this will certainly be a hefty price tag for Kansas City, the peace of mind that comes with having Mahomes as the franchise quarterback can be considered priceless.

The Chiefs already invested the pick and the time by taking him with No. 10 overall and having him it out nearly his entire rookie campaign to learn the ropes as a backup to quarterback Alex Smith. Fortunately, their patience has undoubtedly paid huge dividends after winning an MVP in his first year as a starter and now leading the team to the Super Bowl in his second.
