The Cleveland Browns can’t seem to win no matter how hard they try sometimes. They hoped Johnny Manziel could be the quarterback of the future. But that didn’t work out. So, then they moved on to DeShone Kizer. He didn’t impress either, so fans have assumed that the team would just be using its first pick to take a QB in the draft.

As it turns out, they still may, but not because they want to. It will be because the Browns missed out on Alex Smith.

The Kansas City Chiefs have done what many expected they would do. They cleared the path for Patrick Mahomes to take over next season by trading Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins.

According to Adam Schefter, the Redskins were not the only team in play. As many as six teams tried to acquire Smith.

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer says the Cleveland Browns were one of them.

During an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show Tuesday morning, Alex Smith seemed pretty dismissive when asked about possibly going to the Browns, per Cabot.

“I haven't even thought about that,” Smith said with a laugh. “They've got nowhere to go but up. 1-31 over the last 2 years just sounds amazing.”

It wouldn’t have been shocking had he gone to Cleveland. After all, Browns General Manager John Dorsey orchestrated Kansas City’s trade for Smith back in 2013 while serving as the Chiefs GM.

So, for now, the job still belongs to Kizer. But this also means Kirk Cousins is available, and the Browns could still go after a QB in the draft.
