There has never been a real rivalry between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers.

The two teams have never been title contenders at the same time, and the Clippers were never really good enough to ever be seen as a threat to a Lakers fanbase that has seen their team win 16 NBA championships.

But heading into the 2019-20 campaign, things have changed.

Both Los Angeles clubs had marquee offseasons, with the Lakers acquiring Anthony Davis to play alongside of LeBron James and the Clippers stealing the show by landing Kawhi Leonard and Paul George on the same night in July.

As a result, a new rivalry is budding, and it's one that could potentially become fierce.

Leonard found that out while attending a recent Los Angeles Rams game in Tampa Bay, where the superstar forward heard some boos.

Initially, Leonard thought it was just Buccaneers fans (which would have been weird):

“I didn’t really notice it at first. I thought it was just Buccaneers fans,” Leonard said, according to Mark Medina of USA TODAY Sports. “There were a lot of Buccaneers fans.”

But they were actually Lakers fans.

Leonard, who grew up a Clippers fan, understands:

“It’s not new to me. It’s like second nature,” said Leonard. “I grew up in a household full of Lakers fans.”

That's nothing to the types of boos Leonard will hear from Lakers fans throughout the year, and he and the Clippers will open up their season against the Lakers on Tuesday night.

The Clippers are the “home” team, but there will almost certainly be a large contingent of Lakers fans at the Staples Center waiting to resume their jeering of the Clips' new star, a star who spurned the Lakers in free agency.
