During his media session on Thursday, Los Angeles Clippers head coach Doc Rivers went on a passionate rant about how assistant Sam Cassell should be a head coach in the NBA.

There are a few coaching openings that will need to be filled this offseason, and Rivers is hoping someone gives Cassell a chance:

“Sam Cassell should be a head coach, period,” Doc Rivers said, per Tomer Azarly of ClutchPoints.

“He's got an incredibly high basketball IQ, and I just hope he gets a shot. He's paid every due that's possible. When they talk about paying dues, he's paid every due that is possible and he's yet to get a job. So, I'm hoping that happens.”

Cassell, who won three NBA titles as a player, has been on Rivers' staff for a while. It will be interesting to see if the Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Pelicans, Philadelphia 76ers or Oklahoma City Thunder decide to at least interview Cassell this offseason.

Those are the four NBA franchises in need of a new head coach, and there could always be more openings in the near future.

The Clippers are one win away from advancing to the conference finals for the first time in franchise history. Los Angeles has a 3-1 series lead over the Denver Nuggets after taking Game 4 on Wednesday.

While Rivers is one of the best coaches in the NBA, he certainly has gotten a lot of help from Cassell, who has a high IQ of the game and is able to connect with players since he was a star back in his playing days.
