Kawhi Leonard of the Los Angeles Clippers continues to pile up the honors and awards in his career. Now, the 28-year-old two-time Finals MVP will have his number 15 jersey number retired by his college team the San Diego State Aztecs.

Leonard will be the first player in school history to have his number retired, which shows the program to be fairly discerning about who will be honored by the school. This is a school that actually has a national championship in its history – all the way back in 1941.

At this point, Kawhi is an extremely accomplished NBA player what with two Finals MVP awards on his resume as well as two victories in the NBA Finals against juggernaut opponents. The four-time All-Star is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the NBA, and he has achieved five All-Defensive Team selections for his efforts as well as two Defensive Player of the Year awards.

Despite being the most decorated NBA player in San Diego State school history, he is not the longest-tenured. That honor goes to Michael Cage, who was drafted in 1984 and played a whopping 15 seasons from 1984-85 to 1999-2000. A prolific rebounder, Cage is actually number one among all players in win shares among players drafted out of San Diego State.

The Aztecs are the lone undefeated team in NCAA Men’s basketball at the moment, and as such their ranking has risen all the way to number four overall in the AP poll.

Will retiring Kawhi Leonard’s number give them that added push to capture magic in the NCAA Tournament? Only time will tell.
