Rhodes was born Cody Garrett Runnels to legendary wrestler Dusty Rhodes. He eventually legally changed his name to Cody Garrett Runnels Rhodes.

Cody began wrestling while studying in Lassiter High School. He’d have a pretty successful amateur wrestling career, winning the Georgia State tournament during his junior and senior years. Originally, he planned to wrestle in college at Penn State University, but eventually decided to pursue professional wrestling straight out of high school. As such he attended an acting school after graduating.

Rhodes started training to wrestle professionally all the way back when he was 12 years old, but he officially began his sports entertainment career in 2006 when he was 20 years old. He initially trained under esteemed wrestling trainer Al Snow, as well as all-time WWE great Randy Orton. Rhodes started in Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), which used to be the WWE’s developmental brand. He won his first silverware for the promotion swiftly after winning the Southern Tag Team Championship. He went on to win the Championship one more time.

Rhodes was also OVW Television Champion and OVW Heavyweight Champion, making him just the fourth Triple Crown champion in the history of OVW.

Cody was promoted soon thereafter to the main roster, with his first feud being with his former mentor Randy Orton.

Rhodes would win his first main roster silverware in the form of the Tag Team Championship alongside Ted DiBiase. The two eventually formed a stable of multi-generational wrestlers called The Legacy with Orton. The stable lasted from 2008 to 2010.

He’d have two Tag Team Championships during this time, on with DiBiase and another one with Hardcore Holly.

Rhodes’ next gimmick would be the “Dashing”/”Undashing” Cody Rhodes. These gimmicks were predicated upon his looks, as well as a legitimate nose injury that forced him to have facial reconstruction surgery.

As “Undashing” Cody Rhodes, he won his first singles championship by defeating Ezekiel Jackson for the Intercontinental Championship. He’d go on to have two Intercontitental Championship reigns, with this being his most prestigious belt in WWE.

Next came arguably his most memorable storyline in WWE. Rhodes was “fired” in kayfabe after losing to Randy Orton. He, along with brother Goldust, would go on to be “reinstated” after winning against Tag Team Champions Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns. They’d win the Championships soon thereafter. That was about as good as it got for Rhodes in WWE. Still, this all helped to aid to Cody Rhodes’ net worth in 2022.

His last gimmick with the company was in the form of “Stardust”, a facepainted character similar to his brother. He eventually departed in 2016, after numerous creative differences made him request his release. Despit this, Rhodes has stated that there is no bad blood between himself and WWE.

After being used largely as a lower-to-mid-card talent in WWE, Cody showed his capabilities to be a main event talent in the independent circuit. He chose to be billed as simply Cody (to avoid legal issues with WWE) while wrestling for the likes of Evolve, Pro Wrestling Guerilla, GFW, and WhatCulture Pro Wrestling. He eventually worked for Ring of Honor (ROH), winning the ROH World Champonship from indy legend Cristopher Daniels soon thereafter. He also went on to win the Six-Man Tag Team Championship with The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson). Rhodes was ROH Wrestler of the Year in 2017.

During 2016-19, he also worked with the two biggest promotions outside WWE at the time, Impact Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW). It was a brief spell for Cody with the former, only working for Impact for just 1 year.

He was, however, magnificent in NJPW. Rhodes joined Bullet Club upon his arrival, which has been the most prominent stable in professional wrestling. Rhodes went on to feud with Bullet Club leader Kenny Omega, causing a “civil war” within the group. He eventually won the IWGP United States Championship against Juice Robinson after several unsuccessful attempts at winning the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. Bullet Club eventually split up, with Cody teaming up with Omega, The Young Bucks, Adam Page, and Marty Scurll to form “The Elite”.

In 2019, Rhodes and the Elite went on to create All Elite Wrestling (AEW). He, along with fellow Elite members Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks, would serve as Executive Vice Presidents of the promotion.

Naturally, Cody also served as an in-ring performer for AEW. He went on to produce the first-ever five-star match of his career (from the Wrestling Observer) against his brother Goldust. Moreover, he also went on to be the promotion’s inaugural TNT Champion, winning a single-elimination tournament for the title. He went on to win the Championship two more times, a record number of times.

Cody also led the promotion to become the biggest outside threat to WWE since WCW way back in the ’90s.

However, Cody has just recently departed from the promotion along with his wife, Brandi, after losing the TNT Championship in an acclaimed match against Sammy Guevarra. Rhodes is now a free agent and is linked to a sensational return to the WWE.

Cody Rhodes went from a forgotten second-generation midcard talent to an international wrestling superstar. He has made a name for himself as one of the best performers on the mic and in the ring, as well as helped create the hottest wrestling promotion today.

For his efforts, Cody is now worth $4 million.
