Matt Reeves' The Batman has been a huge hit (unless you're Marlon Humphrey), so it should surprise nobody that there are already spinoffs in the works, especially given the number of major characters involved in the film. Wednesday came the announcement of a spinoff based on Colin Farrell's Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin.

Farrell released this statement on The Penguin news, via The Hollywood Reporter:

“The world that Matt Reeves created for The Batman is one that warrants a deeper gaze through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot,” Colin Farrell said in a statement. “I couldn’t be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become The Penguin. Will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem.”

Reeves made this statement:

“Colin exploded off the screen as the Penguin in The Batman, and having the chance to thoroughly explore the inner life of that character on HBO Max is an absolute thrill.”

Collin Farrell was unrecognizable as The Penguin in The Batman thanks to his prosthetics, but he delivered an excellent performance as an eccentric crime boss working under Carmine Falcone. While he's not quite a criminal mastermind just yet in this film, the events set things up for him to take over a kingpin role moving forward, and this HBO Max series will surely explore that.

The Penguin was famously played by Danny DeVito in Batman Returns, but Farrell is now putting his own spin on the legendary villain and will be able to do even more with the character now that he's getting his own show.
