The Athletic's Shams Charania reported Wednesday night that Colin Kaepernick would be investing in Ice Cube's BIG3 league, which would help allow the 3-on-3 league to continue operating. However, a rep for Kaepernick denied those investment plans to The Athletic on Thursday morning.

The denial was pretty firm:

“It's just not true.”

The initial reporting seems to be based on sources close to the league, but this is a strong denial from Colin Kaepernick's camp, so this is an eye-opening disconnect. Was Kaepernick involved in conversations with BIG3 and there was just a misunderstanding after those talks? Was he used to create publicity to try to help save the league?

Multiple players are reportedly preparing for the league to shut down, so if Kaepernick isn't investing, we'll see if that shutdown happens or if somebody else comes to throw them a lifeline. BIG3 was founded by Ice Cube and entertainment executive Jeff Kwatinetz and began in 2017.

A number of former NBA stars have participated in the league, which was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 but started up again in 2021. Stephen Jackson's squad, Team Trilogy, won the league last year, with a team headlined by Jarrett Jack and Amir Johnson.

As for Kaepernick, he's still trying to make it back in the NFL. He recently had a workout with the Las Vegas Raiders, but it doesn't look like he'll be joining them for training camp in 2022. He hasn't played in the NFL since the 2016 season and is now 34 years old.
