The COVID-19 situation continues to affect college football, this time the SEC. The University of Florida has put football activities on hold due to a new coronavirus outbreak, per ESPN.
This comes days after Florida head coach Dan Mullen said he wanted “The Swamp” at full capacity for the team's Week 4 matchup against the LSU Tigers.
UF announced earlier Tuesday that it has five new COVID-19 cases.
“The University of Florida football team has experienced an increase in positive COVID tests among players this week,” Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin said in a statement. “Out of an abundance of caution, team activities are paused as of Tuesday afternoon.”
“Absolutely want to see 90,000 in The Swamp,” Mullen said. “I don't think the section behind our (Florida) bench, I didn't see an empty seat. It was packed. The student section, there must have been 50,000 behind our bench going crazy. Hopefully that creates a home-field advantage for us next week because now we passed a law in our state that we can do that. We want our students out there cheering us on to give us that home-field advantage.”
Mullen looks pretty foolish after that quote, especially since the state of Florida has been a huge hotspot for COVID-19.
The Gators are 2-1 on the season and the No. 10th ranked team in the country. Florida defeated the Ole Miss Rebels and South Carolina Gamecocks to open the season, but fell to the Texas A&M Aggies in Week 3 by a final score of 41-38.
Florida was supposed to take on LSU (1-2) this Saturday. The game — as of Tuesday evening — was still on, but that could easily change in the next 48 hours.
