Why Georgia Tech Could Cover The Spread

Georgia Tech beat Kennesaw State at home last week totaling 412 yards, including 254 yards through the air. Quarterback Jordan Yates finished 17 of 23 with four touchdown passes in the victory. Dontae Smith led the rushing attack as he ran for 82 yards and one touchdown. The team’s top rusher, Jahmyr Gibbs, has carried the ball 29 times for 155 yards (77.5 per game) this year. He has proven to be a dual-threat player, racking up 61 receiving yards on five catches as well. Defensively the Yellow Jackets forced three turnovers including two interceptions and one fumble. They allowed only 17 points and 3.5 rush yards per attempt to Kennesaw State. Luckily for Georgia Tech, the Tigers do not have a win against the spread as a 28.5-point favorite or greater this season. Additionally, Clemson is 1-5 against the spread in their last six at Memorial Stadium.

Why Clemson Could Cover The Spread

Clemson flexed their muscles last game on South Carolina State after a devastating Week one loss where they did not reach the end-zone versus Georgia. Last week’s victory for Clemson was a dominant one as they went up 35-3 at halftime and accumulated 504 total yards. The Tigers were efficient on 3rd down, converting 8-13 (62%) and racking up 26 first downs. Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei finished with 171 yards and 3 total touchdowns, including two rushing scores. Running back Will Shipley is the team’s top rusher and has now carried the ball twelve times for 87 yards (43.5 per game). The Tigers definitely miss having Trevor Lawrence and Travis Ettiene leading the offense in the backfield, however. Head-to-head, Clemson holds an edge against Georgia Tech over the past four meetings between the two teams, recording a 4-0 record in those games. Also, Clemson has outscored the Yellow Jackets 198-52 in those four head-to-head matchups. Moreover, the Tigers are 22-8 (73%) against the spread in their last 30 conference games. Georgia Tech has not played any significant opponents yet and traveling to Memorial Stadium will be a tough challenge for the Yellow Jackets.

Final Georgia Tech-Clemson Prediction & Pick

The Tigers bring a defense that ranked first in the ACC in total and scoring defense. They have only allowed 6.5 total points so far this year. The Yellow Jackets offense is nothing special but they have proven to be able to put up points. They averaged 7.0 yards per play themselves and punted only three times. Conversely, the Tigers offense has been inconsistent and had three turnovers last week to a feeble defense. Although the game is in Clemson, the line is a bit too high for the Tigers at this point in the season. Georgia Tech should keep this game within reach of the high line. Take the Yellow Jackets against the spread.

FINAL PICK: GEORGIA TECH ATS +28.5 (-110)
