The Indianapolis Colts found their answer under center for the 2020 NFL season by signing former Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers to a one-year deal. However, it appears he was not their first option.

According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Colts had attempted to trade for Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Nick Foles before signing Rivers:

Before signing Philip Rivers, the Colts were working multiple QB options, including a potential trade with the Jaguars for Nick Foles.

The Colts made it no secret that they were looking to switch things up under center following an underwhelming 2019 NFL season from quarterback Jacoby Brissett. As a result, they had been linked to a number of rumors regarding potential options at quarterback in free agency this offseason.

Meanwhile, the Jaguars are still in the midst of quite a fire sale after parting ways with the bulk of their key starters on defense. It appears Foles was nearly the next big name to be on the move as they continue with their grueling rebuild with quarterback Gardner Minshew likely taking over after a promising rookie campaign.

Indianapolis may have been looking for a more long-term option in Foles as opposed to the 38-year-old Rivers, however, it seems they were never able to come to terms on a deal. As a result, the Colts were forced to settle for giving the veteran a one-year trial to show that he still has plenty left in the tank while Foles continues to wait for his uncertain future in Jacksonville to unfold.
