The Indianapolis Colts are obviously now without longtime starting quarterback Andrew Luck, who abruptly elected to retire from the NFL just before the start of the 2019-20 campaign. As a result, the Colts were quickly forced to turn to former New England Patriots backup signal caller Jacoby Brissett, who has impressed at times throughout his career despite mostly being inconsistent under center.

Because the Colts missed out on the postseason under the direction of Brissett this past season, Indianapolis general manager Chris Ballard was asked about his team's current quarterback situation on Tuesday.

“We did a 2-year deal with Jacoby to find out,” Ballard recently told the media at a press conference from the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine, via NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk. “We like Jacoby Brissett. Love what he stands for. It was almost a tale of two seasons where we’re 5-2, he’s playing good football. He had the injury and we had injuries as a team and we kind of slid down. We did the short term deal to see what we had. To say we’re going to create competition, we’re going to create competition at any spot. That’s going to be a year-to-year thing.”

While it remains to be as to whether or not the Colts bring back Brissett as the team's starting quarterback next season, Indianapolis will surely need to at least bring in some insurance as well. If the Colts are going to return to glory in the immediate future, it appears as though an upgrade under center will be needed — and fast.
