There is plenty of optimism surrounding the Indianapolis Colts with all the new changes they have made this NFL offseason. However, it goes without saying that any chance they have at a successful 2018 NFL season relies solely on the health of quarterback Andrew Luck.

Even then, there is still some doubt as to whether or not Luck will be as good as he was before the shoulder injury. General manager Chris Ballard said during an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio that the star quarterback is looking forward to proving the critics wrong.

“I think he's got a little bit of a chip on his shoulder to prove some people and naysayers wrong,” Ballard said. “That's a beautiful thing with a quarterback that I think is top five in this league.”

It is encouraging to see that Luck has fed off all of this doubt rather than letting it get to him. That said, some rust is to be expected given that he has not played since the final stretch of the 2016 NFL season.

There is no doubt that Luck was on his way to becoming a premier quarterback in the league prior to the injury. However, lingering issues with his throwing shoulder have delayed his return. Although there is plenty of optimism that he will make his comeback by the season opener, it is safe to take any updates from the Colts with a grain of salt.

Fortunately, Indianapolis has taken precautions to ensure the protection of their franchise player moving forward after exhausting two of their first three picks in the 2018 NFL Draft on the offensive line.
