The Indianapolis Colts managed to shore up some depth in their receiving corps with the addition of Devin Funchess this offseason. It appears he has already made quite the impression on head coach Frank Reich.

Reich was able to get an ample look at Funchess through OTAs and mandatory minicamp. He said during an appearance on 107.5 The Fan, that the new addition has proven to be a seamless fit:

“Very encouraged,” Reich said. “We knew right away, you could tell day one that he was smart. [He was] not going to have a problem grasping the system. Then it’s just a question of getting used to the way we do things, the way we teach things and then our schemes. I just thought he showed a very high aptitude for that. Then really as a route runner, for a big guy for his size we’ve said he’s got good feet and he’s got good body control. So I was just really encouraged by his progress.”

Expectations are as high as ever in Indianapolis. Although the Colts enjoyed plenty of success through the air thanks to quarterback Andrew Luck along with the stellar duo of wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and tight end Eric Ebron last year, Reich has indicated that he would like to go with a more balanced approach on offense moving forward. In order to do so, they will need a few more weapons to emerge around Luck.

As a result, the Cols gave Funchess a one-year deal to prove he can play an integral role in the offense. The former second-rounder showed flashes of promise during his tenure with the Carolina Panthers, however, he was never able to develop into their No. 1 option. Indianapolis is now hoping that he can potentially become the No. 2 option to Hilton in 2019.
