The Indianapolis Colts suffered a devastating blow with the sudden retirement of quarterback Andrew Luck. It appears that he is not the only notable departure from the offense heading into the 2019 NFL season.

According to Stephen Holder of The Athletic, Howard Mudd has decided to step down as the senior offensive assistant coach:

Frank Reich's presser beginning.. Howard Mudd has decided to step down. It is his own personal decision, Reich says.

Whether or not Mudd's decision was related to Luck's retirement in any way is unknown. Regardless, there is no question that this has hardly been an ideal start to the regular season for the Colts.

Mudd started his career in the NFL as an offensive line coach back in 1974. He had retired following the 2012 NFL season after helping Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy lead the league in touchdowns. The Colts managed to bring him out of retirement in a new position back in February, however, it appears his tenure with the Colts has now ended before it ever officially started.

Fortunately, Mudd leaves the offensive line in good hands in Chris Strausser. This is a group that allowed the fewest sacks during the 2018 campaign with only 18. Although the personnel under center has changed a bit this offseason, the Colts are still confident in Jacoby Brissett's ability to serve as a viable replacement.

Brissett already has some experience as a starter for the Colts. Of course, he will have much better protection this time around than he did in his first year taking over the offense.
