The Indianapolis Colts are adding a quarterback to their 53-man roster. On Saturday, the team announced the elevation of Chad Kelly to the roster from the practice squad. The addition is a hint of Jacoby Brissett's availability on Sunday, as he battles an MCL sprain in his knee.

With Kelly on the roster, the Colts boast two quarterbacks not named Brissett, with Brian Hoyer being the other. The need for another backup should mean that Brissett is not ready to play on Sunday versus the Miami Dolphins. Last week, the Kansas City Chiefs did a similar move: adding Chad Henne to the active roster before announcing Patrick Mahomes would not play. Or, it could simply be an insurance plan.

Brissett was limited at practice all week with his MCL sprain suffered in the first quarter of last Sunday's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Head coach Frank Reich dubs him as a game-time decision.

I think he’s looked OK during the week of practice and feel confidence in things that he’s done, but we need to take every day and every minute for him to get back and see if we can get comfortable in it,” Reich said on Friday, via the team's official website. “And at the end of the day we gotta make the right decision for him and for the team. But I’m encouraged at some of the progress he’s made.”

On the season, Brissett has thrown for 1,649 yards, 14 touchdowns and three interceptions on a 99.7 passer rating. He has his Colts squad in the thick of a tight AFC South race alongside the Houston Texans. In his absence last week, Hoyer tossed for three touchdowns and 168 yards while also throwing an interception.
