Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck took a big step in his recovery last week when he was seen throwing actual footballs again. However, the Colts aren’t about to make the mistake of thinking Luck is all the way back just yet.

According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the Colts intend to limit Luck’s workload during training camp to ensure that he doesn’t suffer any setbacks with his shoulder. They intend to give Luck some days off and will also monitor his reps in practice.

It certainly makes sense for the Colts to take utmost caution when it comes to Luck’s progress. He’s already missed an entire season due to the injury, so they have to do everything they possibly can to make sure he doesn’t miss even more time.

However, the fact that Luck will be limited puts some serious doubts into his recent statement that he will “absolutely” play in Week 1. Granted, it did seem a bit of a long shot to assume he ever actually could’ve pulled that off.

If he doesn’t appear ready to handle a full workload at training camp, it’s hard to see how he can be ready to play an actual NFL game, especially since he’s only just returned to throwing a football after over a year.

But this appears to be the most sensible way to handle Luck moving forward. His long-term health is much more important than rushing him back to play this season and risking further complications with his shoulder.
