As has been speculated previously, the Indianapolis Colts will indeed not bring back veteran running back Frank Gore for next season. Colts GM Chris Ballard confirmed this to ESPN’s Mike Wells, saying he had already discussed that scenario with Gore even during the season.

“We had a discussion. We had it multiple times during the season. Frank knows we're at the point where we need to get younger, and I want to give Frank a chance to see what's out there and see if he finishes in a place he wants to finish it,” Ballard said. “He's a first-ballot Hall of Fame player. He likes it when you're honest with him.”

Gore, 35, rushed for 2,953 yards and 13 touchdowns while starting all 48 games during his three seasons with the Colts. Even at 34, he still didn't show too many signs of slowing down. He rushed for 961 yards last season, which was good for 12th in the league.

After 10 seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, Gore signed with the Colts in 2015 with the hope that he would be one of the missing pieces that could get them back to the Super Bowl. However, he failed to make the playoffs in his three years with the team as star quarterback Andrew Luck missed 26 out of a possible 48 games during that span.

Gore has already made it clear he intends to play in his 14th season in 2018, and allegedly still has a number of interested suitors for his services. If he does play on, he’ll have a very good chance of climbing even higher in the NFL’s all-time rushing list. He’s just 76 yards short of passing Curtis Martin for fourth place on the list.
