The news of New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels spurning the Indianapolis Colts has sent shockwaves across the world of football. Although the Colts announced on Tuesday that McDaniels would be their next head coach, they seemed to be aware of the odd possibility that McDaniels would back out from the job. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Colts have lined up three interviews in the event that McDaniels turns down the job offer. That contingency plan is now obviously in play for Indianapolis.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Colts were concerned that McDaniels may decide not to take the head-coaching job. As a result, the Colts have prepared for this contingency.

This is a little bit confusing, however. For one, why would the Colts announce on Twitter that they had reached an agreement with Josh McDaniels if they had a feeling that McDaniels would nix the deal? If anything, the Colts at least will not be troubled finding replacements for their new assistants, who are all expected to remain in Indy despite McDaniel’s departure.

The Colts are coming off a disappointing season in which they finished just third in the AFC West with a poor 4-12 win-loss record. That’s the team’s worst since 2011, when they went 2-14. Indianapolis expected McDaniels to help fix the team’s offense that ranked 30th in scoring offense and 31st in total yards, but if they are to improve in those areas, it’s not going to be McDaniels at the helm.
