It was a disastrous 2017 NFL season for the Indianapolis Colts, to say the least. One of the few silver linings for the franchise going into the offseason was the eventual addition of New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

However, McDaniels shocked the NFL world by backing out of the agreement with Indy to stay in New England. The team has since released a statement regarding the coach's decision, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo:

“After agreeing to contract terms to become the Indianapolis Colts’ new head coach, New England Patriots assistant coach Josh McDaniels this evening informed us that he would not be joining our team,” the team said in a statement. “Although we are surprised and disappointed, we will resume our head coaching search immediately and find the right fit to lead our team and organization on and off the field. The scheduled press conference at Lucas Oil Stadium will not take place tomorrow. More information will be forthcoming.”

Thanks to their success in recent years, Patriots coaches have become a commodity in the NFL. However, this season initially appeared to spell the last time that head coach Bill Belichick and his coordinators in McDaniels and Matt Patricia would be coaching together.

Patricia went ahead and followed through on his agreement to become the next head coach of the Detroit Lions. However, it appears team owner Robert Kraft was able to convince McDaniels to stay for the time being. As a result, the Colts are now left scrambling to get interviews with the leftover candidates from this year's coaching search.
