Jacob Eason was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts with the 16th pick all the way in the fourth round (122nd overall). While many believed Eason to be one of the premier quarterback prospects in the draft, it seems the glut of talent at the position — as well as the ready availability of them in free agency — helped the Colts land a potential “quarterback of the future.”

With that in mind, that sacred rite of passage for all rookies occurred for Eason this week when he was given his Madden rating. Eason clocked in with a rating of 63, which was actually the sixth-highest of all rookie quarterbacks.

Eason was ranked lower than Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals (76 rating, first), Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins (73 rating, second), Jordan Love of the Green Bay Packers (71 rating,  third), Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers (70 rating, fourth) and Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles (68 rating, fifth).

Perhaps Eason’s most notable talent is his immense throwing arm, which is represented well in his Madden ratings, as his 93 throwing power rating is tops among all rookie QBs. Eason also ranks fifth in awareness with a 65 – showing that his strength lies in dropping back, scanning the field and then sending bombs to receivers running deep routes.

After two seasons with the University of Georgia, Eason wasn’t happy about his situation, so he opted to transfer – sitting out the 2018 season – then restart in the Pac-12 with the University of Washington. Eason fit in well and produced a sterling season with 3132 passing yards with 23 touchdowns and only 8 interceptions.

With Andrew Luck retired, Eason will have plenty to live up to in his first season, and it will be interesting to see how he performs under that pressure.
