There is a newfound sense of optimism surrounding the Indianapolis Colts amidst the return of quarterback Andrew Luck. However, that does not mean every signal-caller on the roster has become expendable.

Luck's comeback has essentially given Indianapolis the opportunity to shop backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett. According to Zak Keefer of the Indianapolis Star, team owner Jim Irsay says they would not even give up Brissett for a first-round pick:

“All of a sudden, we have the best backup quarterback in football,” Irsay said. “I don’t think we’d accept a [first-round pick in a trade] for him, we think he’s that good.”

Irsay's comments may be a bit of a stretch. However, they are indicative of how much he values Brissett's role on the team. The third-year man out of NC State did a solid job under center last season given the circumstances.

Brissett finished the 2017 campaign with 3,098 yards, 13 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He also tacked on 260 yards and four touchdowns on the ground on his first full season as a starter. While it may not have been the strongest debut, he certainly showed plenty of promise for teams still looking for a potential starting quarterback. Still, it is certainly not enough to garner a first-round pick in exchange.

It is clear that Irsay has high hopes for Brissett as a contingency for Luck. However, the Colts still have a number of issues they need to address if they are to become a legitimate playoff contender. As important as it is to have a viable backup, it may be in their best interest to use their resources to surround Luck with as much talent as possible.
