Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay spoke about the team's quarterback situation during a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

The Colts need a new signal-caller following the retirement of veteran QB Philip Rivers. Irsay said he believes Indy is ready to compete for a Super Bowl and would prefer to have a quarterback who can immediately contribute to that goal:

“Our belief is we’re close, that we have a tremendous nucleus of players that are capable of competing for the Super Bowl very soon,” Irsay said, via Zak Keefer of The Athletic. “Ideally if you can get someone to come in this year who’s ready to go, it gives you your best opportunity.”

Might this be a veiled indication the Colts could pursue Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford.

The Lions and Stafford have mutually agreed to part ways this offseason, with ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reporting Tuesday the Lions have begun receiving inquiries.

Meanwhile, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Indianapolis is a spot Stafford “most definitely has his eye on” in terms of potential destinations.

It stands to reason the Lions can drive Stafford's price up based on the number of teams in his market. Detroit will want to maximize his value, after all. But the former No. 1 overall pick could be worth the cost for the Colts.

Stafford battled through injuries to play all 16 games in 2020, throwing for over 4,000 yards and 26 touchdowns against 10 interceptions. He could thrive behind in Indianapolis' balanced offensive scheme, especially considering the Colts also have one of the best offensive line units in football.

Colts general manager Chris Ballard is likely to keep all options. But if Indy wants someone to step in and win right away, trading for Stafford might be the best option,
