The Indianapolis Colts are looking to move on from the late-season struggles that saw them slip out of playoff contention last year. A key component in putting that unfavorable memory in the past was relieving Carson Wentz of his duties as the team's quarterback. After dealing Wentz to the Commanders and subsequently trading for Matt Ryan, Colts owner Jim Irsay took a not-so-friendly jab at Wentz, via Zak Keefer.

“It's just, for us, it was just it was something that we had to move away from as a franchise,” Irsay said on Wentz. “It was very obvious.”

Irsay clearly didn't hide his opinion with Wentz in those comments, effectively scapegoating the quarterback for the Colts' late-season meltdown and indicating it was a top priority to have a change this offseason. Irsay even described the team as being in a “long dark tunnel,” fully focused on offloading Wentz even without a firm backup plan in place.

Fortunately, they landed a replacement in Ryan. Speaking on their new addition, Irsay said he was “extremely grateful to the football Gods” that the Colts were able to bring the experienced QB to Indy.

Irsay didn't even try to mince words when describing his feelings on the situation regarding Wentz, clearly indicating his relief that the quarterback had been offloaded in the offseason.

Last season with the Colts, Wentz threw 27 touchdown passes and 7 interceptions, leading the team to a 9-8 record. The team was thought to have had been a lock for the playoffs, before an untimely loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars sent their season into a spiral, for much of which Wentz was scapegoated.
