Peyton Manning knows a little bit of what Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck is going through. Manning also missed a whole year in 2011 due to a neck injury which eventually ended his time with the Colts and started Luck’s.

While Manning acknowledges that their situations aren't completely the same, based on his experience, he believes that the Colts QB will need to put a lot of reps in to regain his past glory.

“Everything is an individual thing, so you have to be careful speaking on it since injuries are different,” Manning told ESPN. “But it's also universal. For me, I was a [repetition] guy. I liked to get all the reps on practice. The theory of 10,000 reps, I believe in that. I felt like I was kind of behind because I hadn't gotten the reps even though you have a lot in the bank. It took me a few games before I felt like I was coming back. Getting as many reps as possible is key.”

Despite already missing a full year due to shoulder surgery, Luck still hasn’t progressed to the point of throwing a football again. But the Colts have remained optimistic that Luck will make his return this season.

At the rate he’s going, it seems unlikely that Luck will be able to start throwing by mandatory minicamp in June. That would reduce his chances of getting more of those much-needed reps that Manning suggests ahead of training camp.

Luck should still get those reps at some point. But whether they come in time for him to start the season remains to be seen.
