Indianapolis Colts quarterback Philip Rivers reached a historic milestone Thursday night, passing former Dolphins great Dan Marino for the fifth most passing yards in NFL history.

Playing in his 16th season, Rivers joined the Colts during the offseason, in an attempt to stabilize a quarterback position for Indianapolis that had been in flux since the sudden retirement of former top overall draft pick Andrew Luck.

Despite no longer playing at the all-pro level that he regularly reached during his tenure in San Diego, Rivers has accumulated 10 touchdown passes, and over 2,000 passing yards in eight games on the year, while leading the Colts to an early 5-3 record in the AFC South.

The former North Carolina State product — now with the Colts — is also playing in his 224th consecutive start Thursday night, a mark that is not only the longest current active streak for a QB, but is good enough for second all-time, behind Brett Favre, who he trails by 72 games.

Rivers reached the passing mark thanks to an 11-yard pass to running back Jonathan Taylor, during the first quarter of the Colts game against the Tennessee Titans. In passing Marino, Rivers trails only Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Drew Brees on the all-time yardage list. Though he is only 10,000 passing yards behind the former Packers' play caller, it seems unlikely Rivers will make significant movement towards the top of the rankings given his advanced age, and uncertain playing future.

Though he is likely to retain the starting job for the Colts for the remainder of the season, Rivers is currently signed to a one year contract, and there has been speculation that Indy will look for a long-term solution at the position during the upcoming offseason.
