The Indianapolis Colts have released veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Colts are moving on from Hoyer. The 34-year-old quarterback became expendable when Indianapolis signed Phillip Rivers.

As speculated by Rapoport, this also likely means that Indianapolis will bring back Jacoby Brissett. Brissett served as the team's starting quarterback last season and is due $15 million for this year.

“With Philip Rivers signing and Jacoby Brissett due $15M this year, Hoyer is on his way out (I know, I know, NE may need another QB). This is another sign Indy will keep Brissett.”

Rivers was officially introduced by the Colts on Saturday. General manager Chris Ballard explained why the move is such a pivotal one for Indianapolis.

“Philip is one of the most decorated quarterbacks in the NFL. We are fortunate to add an experienced player of his caliber to our organization,” Colts general manager Chris Ballard said. Philip is a fierce competitor and his veteran leadership will be crucial in the continued development of our young roster.”

Hoyer is an experienced quarterback that should land with another team next season. In fact, some have speculated that he could return to the New England Patriots as a backup quarterback.

The 11-year veteran originally entered the NFL with the Patriots back in 2009. He eventually developed into a starting quarterback, emerging as the starter for the Cleveland Browns in 2014 and the Houston Texans in 2015. In fact, he even led the Texans to a playoff berth during the 2015 season.

Hoyer has appeared in 67 games and has started 38 of them. He has career statistics of 52 touchdowns, 34 interceptions and 10,274 passing yards.
