The Indianapolis Colts came up short against the Cleveland Browns in Week 2 of the preseason. Unfortunately, they have suffered another temporary loss: running back Jonathan Williams.

Williams was forced to leave the game with an apparent chest injury during the second quarter. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, it has since been revealed that he suffered a broken rib:

Meanwhile, during last night’s #Colts game, RB Jonathan Williams suffered a broken rib that ended his night early, source said. Not a long-term ailment.

Although Williams was not able to finish the game, it is encouraging to see that the injury does not appear to be a long-term one. Regardless, the timing of the injury means he could be out for the remainder of the preseason.

Williams has made a strong impression throughout training camp and the preseason. As a result, he had been filling in as the No. 2 option behind starting running back Marlon Mack. His current standing on the depth chart indicates that he is not in jeopardy of losing a spot on the final 53-man roster.

While Mack may have emerged as a potential workhorse in the backfield during the 2018 campaign, head coach Frank Reich has shown a tendency to rely on a committee in the backfield. With Williams and running back Jordan Wilkins dealing with injuries, this will open things up for some of the other running backs such as Nyheim Hines and Aca'Cedric Ware to get some more looks over the final two preseason games.
