Following a disappointing 2017 NFL season, the Indianapolis Colts are hoping to get back on track this upcoming campaign that the team hopes will be spearheaded by the return of Pro Bowl quarterback Andrew Luck.

However, the Colts have taken a significant hit in their backfield with starting running back Robert Turbin being handed a four-game suspension for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy, according to Stephen Holder of The Indy Star.

The 28-year-old had been sparsely used in the running game over his first two years with Indianapolis as he rushed for only 53 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown in six games played. His season had been cut in mid-October after suffering a dislocated elbow that placed on the injured reserve. In his first six years in the league, Turbin has played for the Colts, Seattle Seahawks, Cleveland Browns, and Dallas Cowboys.

The loss of Turbin for the first month of the season puts the Colts in a bit of a bind in the backfield with Marlon Mack dealing with a shoulder injury that could push draft picks Nyheim Hines and Jordan Wilkins into prominent positions from the get-go. Mack is expected to make his return during training camp after undergoing shoulder surgery earlier this offseason.

This could see still see the second-year back grab the starting job for at least the first month as he showed flashes of promise in his rookie campaign. The 22-year-old rushed for 358 yards on 93 carries and three touchdowns along with 21 catches for 225 receiving yards and a touchdown. The departure of Frank Gore earlier this offseason has opened up a huge opportunity for one of the running backs on the roster to breakthrough to grab the starting spot.

Training camp could be a huge indicator of what the Colts plan to do in the backfield as there are still a few proven veterans out in the open market such as Adrian Peterson, Jamaal Charles, and DeMarco Murray.
