Detroit Lions tight end Eric Ebron has been one of the best receiving tight ends in the league in the 2018 NFL season. Perhaps even more impressive is that he has become one despite his limited role in the offense.

This has raised questions regarding the reasoning behind his lack of playing time. However, according to Joel A Erickson of the Indianapolis Star, Ebron says he is content with his role:

“I’m OK with it, because I know that when I am on the field, it’s a presence,” Ebron said. “Whether it’s me getting the ball or not, my presence is felt.”

It is easy to see why Ebron is content with his role. He has come a long way since falling vastly short of expectations with the Detroit Lions. The former first-round pick got off to a rough start in Detroit which ultimately resulted in his release after the 2017 campaign. However, he has enjoyed quite the resurgence in Indianapolis.

Ebron has been the Colts' best pass-catcher this season. He currently leads the team in yards (463), catches (39), and touchdowns (9). Numbers like these would suggest a workhorse role in the offense. However, he has actually ceded a majority of the snaps to tight end Jack Doyle.

The reasoning behind his lack of playing time is due to the fact that Doyle and the other tight ends on the roster are better blockers than Ebron. Fortunately, it has allowed the Colts to focus on utilizing his receiving prowess in predominately passing situations moving forward.
