The Indianapolis Colts found their man in head coach Frank Reich after Josh McDaniels backed out of his initial agreement. Although he may not have been their first choice, there is plenty of optimism that he could be the right one.

Among the believers is former NFL head coach Tony Dungy. During an appearance on PFT Live, Dungy recalled the time he got hired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers only after head coaches Jimmy Johnson and Steve Spurrier had turned down the job:

“Jimmy Johnson turned it down. Steve Spurrier turned it down. Now, they didn’t take as long as Josh McDaniels did, but I was the third choice and that worked out OK,” Dungy said.

Dungy had to take a backseat to the two coaches who were much more revered than he had been at the time. The Tampa Bay job had not been an attractive one after the team was mired in mediocrity for over a decade. Needless to say, things worked out for Dungy and the Bucs organization as he led them to playoff appearances in his first four seasons as head coach. It was not long before he made his way to Indianapolis to win a Super Bowl with the Colts.

That said, Dungy is hoping Reich will enjoy the same success as he did when he was just a backup option. Although the Colts were one of the worst teams in the league last season, there is a newfound sense of optimism with Reich and the return of quarterback Andrew Luck.
