The Indianapolis Colts will be without Trey Burton for the first couple of weeks of the season, according to Colts head coach Frank Reich (via The Athletic's Zak Keefer).

Burton, who signed with the Colts this offseason, suffered a strained left calf during training camp last Saturday. Losing Burton is a significant loss for the Colts, considering they envisioned him being a viable option for quarterback Philip Rivers.

“Trey’s a playmaker. That’s why we brought him here,’’ Reich said during camp, per wane.com. “He has unique pass-receiving ability and route-running ability, so we’re going to miss Trey.’’

Burton proved that he can be a playmaker when he was with the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears. However, the veteran tight end does have a history with injuries. This past season, Burton played in only eight games due to multiple injuries. The 29-year-old finished the season with 14 receptions for 84 yards, and he was ultimately released.

Nevertheless, with Burton out, the Colts are expected to play tight ends Jack Doyle and Mo Alie-Cox. Doyle has proven that he's a solid blocker but he's more effective in the shorter passing game. It's also worth noting that Burton hasn't play well in the past two years, so it'll be interesting to see how the Colts tight end group holds up with Burton’s absence.

The Colts first game of the season will be against the Jacksonville Jaguars, After that, their schedule will get tougher as they play the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Jets.
