The Indianapolis Colts rejected a recent trade offer from the Seattle Seahawks of a second-round pick for backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett, Ben Volin of the Boston Globe reports.

Brissett would’ve been reunited with former Colts quarterbacks coach Brian Schottenheimer, who was hired as the Seahawks’ new offensive coordinator this offseason.

The Colts have not hidden their fondness for Brissett. They have already turned down other trade offers for him this offseason. Colts owner Jim Irsay also declared earlier this month that Brissett was the “best backup quarterback in football” and that he wouldn’t trade him for a first-round pick.

Brissett performed admirably as the team’s starting quarterback last season in place of the injured Andrew Luck. He completed 59 percent of his passes for 3,098 yards with 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also added 260 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns.

Brissett, who was a former third-round pick by the New England Patriots, still has two years remaining on his contract. And while Luck is finally back on the field following a full year out, Brissett remains incredibly valuable insurance for the Colts in case Luck suffers a recurrence of his shoulder injury at any point during this season.

As for Seattle, it speaks both to Schottenheimer’s high regard for Brissett after just one year of working together and the Seahawks’ pressing need of a backup QB for Russell Wilson that they were willing to give up a second-rounder for the Colts' No. 2.

Austin Davis and Alex McGough are the only other quarterbacks currently on the roster, which could see the Seahawks in some serious trouble if Wilson should miss any time this season.
