The NFL Offseason always brings about drama. Typically, the drama lies in contract negotiations or quarterback competitions. For the Washington Commanders, the newest controversy comes from comments made by defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio.

Del Rio recently made a statement about the January 6 Capitol riots, describing the events as a “dust-up” and comparing the responses to the riots and to Black Lives Matter protests from the summer pior.

“I can look at images on the TV, people's livelihoods are being destroyed, businesses are being burned down, no problem,” Del Rio said. “And then we have a dust-up at the Capitol, nothing burned down, and we're going to make that a major deal.”

The former Raiders head coach addressed his comments at Commanders offseason OTAs:

“I believe what I believe, and I'll say what I want to say.” Del Rio said.

Del Rio was brought in to run the Commanders defense under head coach Ron Rivera in 2020. The Commanders have dealt with a number of controversies in that time, including a name change and an investigation into team owner Dan Snyder. Del Rio's comments are the latest in a long line of PR blunders.

Given the speed of the NFL news cycle this news is likely to wash over with minimal consequence. However, it seems like Washington will be as controversial as ever headed into mandatory minicamp and the upcoming season.
