The Washington Commanders are looking to improve their social media presence for their first season under the new name. Ahead of the 2022-2023 season, the team hired social media influencer Katie Feeney to serve as the first-ever Commanders Social Media Correspondent.

They tweeted the news Wednesday morning.

The 19-year-old Maryland native is a student at Penn State University. She has 6.8 million followers and nearly 500 million likes on TikTok, her most popular social media platform. Feeney also creates content on Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter.

So, what is a Social Media Correspondent?

According to the team's release, “Feeney will serve as an extension of the Commanders' social media presence, providing team coverage and content to her 10+ million total social media followers.”

Chief Creative and Digital Officer Will Misselbrook emphasized the Commanders' excitement regarding the hire and further explained her importance to the team. “Katie provides a youthful perspective that will reach new eyes and ears and help cultivate the next generation of fans as we enter the inaugural season of the Washington Commanders,” he said.

The release also noted that this is believed to be the first partnership between an NFL team and a social media content creator.

This is definitely great news for Washington, a team in headlines as of late for not-so-great reasons. Recently, Congress alleged to the Federal Trade Commission that the Commanders and owner Dan Snyder perpetrated a financial scandal.
