Veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers pass offense are set for a keen test in the NFC wild-card round against the Trevon Diggs-led Cowboys secondary.

Diggs had quite a breakout regular season in his second year with the Cowboys. Although he allowed a bulk of yards in coverage over the campaign, his stout ball-hawking skill set played a crucial role in his 11-interception season, which also included 21 passes defended.

Diggs’ standout play earned him a selection to the 2022 Pro Bowl and also a spot on the 2021 AP All-Pro First-Team.

Overall, Garoppolo is not only much impressed with Diggs’ development over the campaign, but he also sees that the Cowboys secondary as a whole will provide him with quite a challenge in this upcoming NFC wild-card clash, which he touched on during a press conference ahead of the game.

“He’s talented,” Garoppolo said. “He’s good in that back end. Trevon really just tracks the ball really well. I mean, you could tell that he used to play receiver. He could make some great plays on it.

“But, their whole defense, they’re pretty skilled across the board, got some big time players and it’ll be a good challenge for us.”

Diggs last faced off against the 49ers in the 2020 season, where the Cowboys came away with a 41-33 regular season win. The second-year cornerback featured in the contest, as he allowed a mere two completions and posted a 47.9 passer rating allowed while in coverage.

Much will be on the line for these two historic franchises this week.
