Aldon Smith is looking to resurrect his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys and the story behind his decision is quite interesting. Nearly two weeks after he signed with the Cowboys, it's been revealed why Smith chose to join Dallas.

Prior to his reinstatement to the NFL at the beginning of April, Smith had spent four years away from football. The former first-round pick was spending his time getting himself in a better state of mind off of the field.

As a matter of fact, Smith decided to join Jay Glazer at his Unbreakable gym — a gym for former veterans and athletes to go to. While working out, Smith would speak to the veterans and help them with the issues they are facing in their lives.

Then, back in January, Mike McCarthy — who was named the next head coach of the Cowboys — made an appearance at Glazer's gym. McCarthy and Smith immediately formed a bond, with both of them interested in forming a relationship in Dallas, according to Smith's agent.

“That’s their focus once he gets reinstated and we get the season rolling,” Smith’s agent, Ron Slavin, said on 103.3 ESPN Radio, via Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “Yeah, they would like to open a chapter here in Dallas.”

Smith's best years are likely behind him, but that doesn't mean he can't be a key contributor in 2020. At 30 years old, the All-Pro edge rusher appears to have the right mindset as he attempts to make a valiant return to the gridiron.

Before inking an incentive-laden deal with the Cowboys, Smith was also drawing interest from the Denver Broncos. However, his conversations with McCarthy earlier this year seemed to have swayed his decision on which team to start fresh with.
