The Dallas Cowboys have been dealing with an intense situation at the running back position with Ezekiel Elliott holding out of training camp. It remains to be seen if the two sides will be able to work something out before the start of the regular season, but that is still the goal.

Despite the goal of getting something done with Elliott, the Cowboys are making moves to shore up their running back depth. That led to them signing a veteran running back.

According to a report from Pro Football Talk, the Cowboys agreed to a deal with free agent running back Alfred Morris, who has played for the franchise in the past.

Running back Alfred Morris has returned to Dallas after a one-year stint in San Francisco. His agents, the Katz Brothers, have confirmed to PFT that Morris has agreed to terms with the Cowboys.

Morris played 12 games with the San Francisco 49ers last season. He ended up carrying the football 111 times for 428 yards and two touchdowns. Those numbers don't look great, but he still has some gas left in the tank.

During the 2016 and 2017 seasons, Morris played with the Cowboys. He played a solid backup role and provided excellent veteran depth. If Elliott does extend his holdout into the season, Morris could very well see himself playing a sizable role for the Cowboys.

All of that being said, this is a move that the franchise hopes they don't have to rely on. Elliott is in his prime and deserves a new contract. The two sides have some work to do, but getting something done will be their top priority.
