The Dallas Cowboys’ lack of a true No. 1 receiver has been a main talking point around the team heading into the season. But perhaps just as pressing is their need to replace starting tight end Jason Witten’s production.

Geoff Swaim is the only Cowboys tight end who’s caught a pass in an actual NFL regular-season game and is the favorite to start. But according to Jori Epstein of the Dallas Morning News, Blake Jarwin has emerged as quarterback Dak Prescott’s preferred target at the position.

Dak Prescott regularly targeted Jarwin up the middle, particularly in red-zone situations. Jarwin's been studying Jason Witten film and Prescott spoke highly of his ability to get open. It was a step in the right direction, Jarwin said. “I'm happy to continue to build that chemistry between us,” Jarwin said, “and the respect that I can be in the spot so he can get to me and trust in me that I'll catch the ball.”

The Cowboys aren’t exactly spoiled for choice at tight end. Apart from Swaim and Jarwin, Rico Gathers and rookie Dalton Schultz are the other options on the depth chart, and neither has any track record to speak of.

But unless they make a move to bring in a veteran, the Cowboys will have to make do with what they have. If Jarwin steps up and proves to be a reliable target for Prescott, then that would be great. But having a tight-end-by-committee would also be acceptable as long as they’re getting at least production out of the position this season.
