This time last year, there was plenty of talk about how the Dallas Cowboys found their next franchise quarterback in Dak Prescott. However, those discussions have died down amidst Prescott's struggles in the 2017 campaign.

His inability to follow up on a spectacular rookie season has raised some concern about whether or not he is the Cowboys' quarterback of the future. Prescott dispelled any doubts about his status as a franchise player during an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio:

“I know I can be a franchise quarterback and I know that I am. I know I am going to get better and with this team and this franchise behind me the “sky is the limit.”

Prescott burst onto the scene during his rookie year after filling in for an injured Tony Romo. His stellar performance out of the gate is essentially what forced Romo into early retirement. As a result, their expectations were higher than ever for Dallas last offseason.

Unfortunately, he endured a bit of a sophomore slump. Things got even worse when running back Ezekiel Elliott was forced to serve a six-game suspension. Elliott's absence forced Dallas to rely more on Prescott's arm to lead the offense.

However, he was clearly unable to deliver after the Cowboys failed to score a touchdown in the first three games of Elliott's suspension.

That said, Prescott still has plenty to prove in order to establish himself as a franchise quarterback. Players of this caliber are expected to perform regardless of who is on the field.

He will have another chance to do so this season in what team owner Jerry Jones has indicated will be a deciding year for him.
