It seems that Dak Prescott has been playing his cards right all along. The Dallas Cowboys' star QB is set to sign the franchise tag for the 2020 NFL season, and according to former NFL GM Mike Tannenbaum, it gives the 26-year-old an “enormous leverage” in future contract negotiations.
I’ve thought all along that a long term deal, if it gets done at all, will be within a day or two of the July 15th deadline. @dak has enormous leverage as he’s locked in at $31,400,000 and would make around $38mm next year if he’s Franchised in ‘21. https://t.co/lv3AKGykKv

It has been reported earlier that Prescott is planning to sign his much-talked about franchise tag on Monday. This franchise tag has been looming over the quarterback since July 2019 when the Cowboys initially presented a contract extension.
After a ton of back and forth between the Cowboys front office and Prescott's team, Dak chose to settle on the $31.4 million franchise tag. As per Tannenbaum's tweet, the 2016 Rookie of the Year is poised for an even higher franchise tag for 2021 at $38 million if they don't agree on a new long-term extension.
When Prescott officially signs for the current figure, he will have the highest base salary in the entire league this coming season. Prescott's $31.4 million salary is almost $8 million dollars more than Jimmy Garoppolo's base salary of $23.8 million with the San Francisco 49ers (per Sportrac).
Both camps still have until the league's July 15 deadline to negotiate an extension before the quarterback is locked to play under the franchise tag for the 2020 campaign. Once the signal-caller signs the exclusive tag, he will be obliged by his contract to show up to the Cowboys' training camp next month — assuming everything goes as planned.
