The Dallas Cowboys are facing a very daunting task this offseason: keeping together their playoff core from last season. With tons of free agents to sign and lots of big contracts, they have already made a very difficult decision.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Cowboys are likely to release star wide receiver Amari Cooper. The move creates $16 million in cap space, per ESPN's Field Yates.

The Cowboys acquired Cooper via trade from the Las Vegas Raiders midway through the 2018 season in exchange for a first-round pick. He led the team in receiving yards twice and led (or tied for the lead) in receiving touchdowns in all three of his full years. Cooper, who is just 27 years old, immediately becomes one of the best free-agent wide receivers alongside Davante Adams and Chris Godwin.

With Michael Gallup's knee injury and pending free agency putting his future with the Cowboys in question, Dallas needs to figure out who will complement CeeDee Lamb in its wide receiver core. Tight end Dalton Schultz, who was third on the team in receiving yards last season, is also a free agent. Dak Prescott's once-strong group of pass-catchers is dwindling, which is a huge problem that needs to be addressed.

After winning the NFC East last season, the Cowboys are in danger of losing other key contributors and allowing their rivals to pass them in the standings.
