Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott has been holding out of training camp due to a contract dispute with the team, and there is no resolution currently in sight.

However, the Cowboys are hoping that Elliott, who has been training on his own in Cabo, comes back in shape if he does decide to return:

“Zeke has the ability to just completely hit the ground running, if I may use that,” said Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, according to Rob Phillips and David Helman of the team's official website. “He has that, and we expect that. He says it, and I believe him, that he’s in great shape. So I don’t think that’ll be an issue when he does come back.”

Back when Elliott was serving his six-game suspension in 2017, he spent his time training in Cabo and came back just fine later that season, so Dallas has no reason to doubt that he is staying in good condition.

But obviously, this time is a bit different. While the Cowboys knew they were getting Elliott back in 2017, they don't know for sure if they will be seeing him on the field in 2019.

The 24-year-old has two years remaining on his current deal and is scheduled to make $3.9 million this coming season and $9.1 million in 2020, but Elliott is worried is about his future beyond his current contract, especially considering that he has led the league in carries in two of his first three years in the NFL.

Elliott is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he led the league with 1,434 rushing yards.
