Success has been hard to come by for the Dallas Cowboys – but not money.

According to Kurt Badenhausen of Forbes.com, the Cowboys are not only the most valuable sports team in America. Jerry Jones’ NFL club is also the most expensive in the world.

The Dallas Cowboys are the world’s most valuable sports team for the third straight year at $4.8 billion. America’s Team has the highest revenue ($840 million) and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization ($350 million) of any franchise.

The Cowboys came out on top over a trio of soccer powerhouses, Manchester United ($4.123 billion), Real Madrid ($4.088 billion), and Barcelona ($4.064 billion), who were right behind them. The New York Yankees ($4.000 billion) rounded out the top five.

The current financial value of the Cowboys is many folds more expensive than the relatively cheap price Jones shelled out in 1989 to purchase the team.

Per Darren Rovell of ESPN:

When Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys in 1989 — he bought 100 percent of the stadium for $65 million and 60 percent of the team at a $63 million valuation — 13 percent of the team had been foreclosed on and the Cowboys were losing $1 million a month.

But despite their booming business, the Cowboys still haven't won the Vince Lombardi Trophy since 1995. Since 1996, the Cowboys haven’t reached past the divisional round of the playoffs. Last year, they did not even make it past the Week 17 of the season, finishing with a 9-7 record, good for only second in the NFC East.
