Dak Prescott is undoubtedly going to be under center for the Dallas Cowboys next season, but it remains to be seen whether or not he gets a long-term deal. Less than a month before free agency, Dallas has a backup plan for bringing back Prescott.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that the Cowboys would ideally like to get a long-term contract in place with Prescott. However, if both sides can't come to an agreement, Dallas may need to exhaust one of their other options.

On Thursday, all 32 teams were given the green light to begin using their franchise tags. The Cowboys, along with the other 31 teams, will have until March 12 to decide if they want to utilize the franchise tag.

In the event that Prescott doesn't have a contract that is agreed upon, the Cowboys could very well use their franchise tag on him. More specifically, Dallas would be willing to place the exclusive franchise tag on the former fourth-round pick.

Simply placing the non-exclusive franchise tag would allow Prescott to make the average of the top five quarterback salaries over the past five years. Whereas the exclusive franchise tag is the average of the top five quarterback salaries in the current year.

Currently, the exclusive franchise tag for Prescott is estimated to be around $33 million. In addition, placing the exclusive franchise tag would prevent other teams from speaking to the Cowboys signal-caller.

Over the years, franchise tags have been frowned upon by quarterbacks in the NFL. But for Prescott, signing the exclusive franchise tag could be the best move toward getting a long-term deal in the future.
